BIOGRAPHY
Hugh de Audley was born about 1267, the son of Sir James de Audley and Ela Longespee. Before 7 January 1293, probably in 1288, Hugh married Isolt/Isende, widow of Sir Walter de Balun of Much Marcle, county Hereford (who was living and married to her in 1286/7). Hugh and Isolt had three children, Hugh, Alice and James, all of whom would have progeny.
Isolt brought him the manor of Eastington, county Gloucester. It had previously been held by the Baluns, so she brought it as dower from her first marriage, not as a marriage-portion from her own family.
Hugh is recorded as lord of the manor of Eastington in 1316, and he had a grant of free warren in 1318. In 1322 he appears to have joined his son Hugh de Audley, earl of Gloucester, in the barons' revolt against the Despensers, favourites of King Edward II, as he was imprisoned and the manor taken by the Crown. He died in prison between November 1325 and March 1326. After his death the manor was restored to his widow Isolt in 1326. She died in 1338.
